Migration and local innovation:
post-USSR inventors in Europe and Israel
Recent migratory shocks call for deep and structured investigations on both the benefits and the shortcomings of such a phenomenon. Using patent records from the European Patent Office this paper documents the influence of Soviet inventors, who migrated to Europe and Israel after the collapse of the Soviet Union, on the patent production of local ones. Preliminary findings suggest the presence of a knowledge diffusion mechanism, although the effect is lower for early migrants.
